From the distillery of Australia’s favourite rum to the city’s equally well-known brewed soft drinks, the icons of Bundaberg are well worth seeing during your visit.
The sugar city of Bundaberg is located in one of the most fertile regions of Australia. The patchwork of fields that make up the coastal plains surrounding the regional city are home to sugar cane plantations and farmlands that are a major food basket for Queensland with a vast array of produce from salad varieties and vegetables crops to melons and mangoes.

Yet, when you mention Bundaberg most people think of ‘sugar’ and ‘rum’ – after all ‘Bundy’ is synonymous with the locally distilled spirit – Bundaberg Rum – sold right across Australia. One of the highlights of a visit to Bundaberg is seeing how this famous local spirit is distilled. You can take part in the Bundaberg Rum Distillery Experience, explore the museum at the former Bondstore with its mammoth old oak vats that once stored 75,000 litres each of the golden rum, and after the Distillery Tour you can learn how to blend your own rum.
Rum isn’t the only drink that Bundaberg is famous for. Bundaberg Brewed Drinks is known for its range of traditional quality brewed fruit drinks and most famous of all is their Bundaberg Ginger Beer. Head for the distinctive Bundaberg Barrel with the classic 1929 Chevy truck ‘Old Cliffy’ parked outside and take part in one of the tours. Sold all over Australia, Bundaberg’s soft drink range is also exported.
While there is much to see on land you can also enjoy a river cruise on the Bundy Belle, a classic river ferry that plies the Burnett River from the banks of the city centre taking in views of the Rum Distillery and Bundaberg’s Bulk Sugar Terminal on the way towards the estuary and the Bundaberg Port Marina.
