Rockhampton’s heritage precincts, its grand colonial pubs and buildings echo the city’s rich past from the era of gold mining and its cattle industry. Heritage is a strong theme in the local attractions beginning with Indigenous heritage and culture at the Dreamtime Cultural Centre north of Rockhampton. Also on this side of the city is the Heritage Village or head underground for an extraordinary network of caves at Capricorn Caves.
Mount Morgan has a fascinating heritage with its 99 years of gold mining that reaped some 262 tonnes of gold. Tours explore Mount Morgan’s history and reveal a link to far earlier times with the Jurassic Dinosaur footprints discovered in the mine’s fire clay caverns. Further inland at the Rubyvale Gemfields visitors can discover the Miner’s Heritage Walk-in Mine. And for yet a different kind of mine, the coal mining that has been such a significant part of the Central Queensland economy over the last half century is showcased at the Blackwater International Coal Centre’s interpretive tours.
Discover the region’s natural treasure on a tour of beautiful Byfield National Park on the coast north of Yeppoon, take a day cruise to the glorious tropical islands of the Keppel Group or a coastal cruise. You could also meet some of the local wildlife at the Koorana Crocodile Farm. Or maybe you’d just prefer a leisurely morning’s tour of the sights of Rockhampton by limousine.
We can help you discover the best of Capricorn Region when you next visit Central Queensland.
