Hervey Bay is Australia’s Whale Watching Capital. Each year pods of the mighty humpback whales migrate up the east coast of Australia from Antarctica to the tropical waters of the Whitsundays to mate and for the pregnant females to deliver their new calves. Many of the whales take a holiday – sometimes as long as 10 days – by sheltering and resting in the calm waters of Hervey Bay. This well researched phenomenon is unique to Hervey Bay and gave rise to the original whale watching tours.
Hervey Bay is still the best location to enjoy seeing the whales up close and watch them as they rise to break the water’s surface for fresh air, sometimes slapping the water with their tail fluke or flippers, and most spectacular of all when they breech, lifting out of the water to crash down in a mammoth splash. A range of informative whale-watch cruises embark for half-day tours, some with underwater microphones to listen in on the whale chatter and others with underwater viewing. Seeing the whales in these sheltered waters is not only more comfortable for guests but provides a better chance of getting that special photo. The whale-watching tours operate from June to early November.
Fraser Island is a World Heritage treasure – the longest sand island in the world with its freshwater perched lakes, crystal clear streams and creeks, coastal dunes, towering rainforest growing on sand, a beach that lives up to its name of 75 Mile Beach, and a wealth of birdlife, flora and fauna. 4WD adventure tours take visitors to some of the island’s many natural features including seasonal highlights such as the annual wildflower season.
Other activities for the Fraser Coast that you can book with Visit Queensland include scuba diving and sea kayaking or take a daytrip by air to Lady Elliot Island for guided snorkelling tours, reef walking and glass-bottom boat cruises on the coral cay that is the southern anchor for the Great Barrier Reef.
