The two tiny communities of Seventeen Seventy and Agnes Water flank the 8km of sandy beach that attracts so many visitors from overseas and Australia to the Discovery Coast. Seventeen Seventy marks the first point of landing in what is now Queensland for the Endeavour and Lt. James Cook (later to be promoted to Captain). A cairn at Round Head denotes the landing point.
Among the variety of experiences to book through Visit Queensland is the iconic pink amphibious tour – 1770 LARC! Tours. The distinctive vehicles take visitors for an unforgettable ride along the shores to Eurimbula National Park and Bustard Head Light Station. Included in the experience is the chance to go sand tobogganing down the dunes.
For the truly adventurous there are 3 or 4 night Castaway Adventure Tours where you can escape to a deserted island and live like a castaway in a fully established camp where you can fish, go crabbing and kayaking or just enjoy beachcombing far away from the crowds.
Back onshore visitors to Discovery Coast can also book experiences to learn how to surf or to join the 3-hour Scooter Roo tour with mini chopper motorbikes that require just a car licence.
Gladstone’s attractions include an excellent regional gallery and museum as well as a second museum dedicated to maritime history. The city has an appealing marina precinct and visitors can also participate in the local free Industry Tour. South of the city, the Tondoon Gardens are well worth a visit as it focuses on plants indigenous to the region. Offshore is one of just a few coral cays with a resort – Heron Island, which is also a key research station for studying the Great Barrier Reef.
