In the heart of the tropics, on the shores of the Coral Sea lies Australia’s Sugar Capital of Mackay. With islands and reefs offshore that form part of the Great Barrier Reef, a coastline of some 31 beaches, and a hinterland of rainforests, waterfalls, gorges and the mountainous Eungella National Park, this is a glorious part of the Queensland coast to explore.

With a population of just under 80,000, Mackay offers the infrastructure and services of a major regional city but retains the appeal of a tropical country town. The wide streets are dotted with lush foliage and the architecture mixes colourful art deco with neo classical and contemporary. Good shopping, great dining and a wide choice of places to stay make Mackay the perfect base to explore all of what the region has to offer.

In the city centre choose from several 4 and 4.5 star hotels for rooms and suites or modern luxury apartments with all the facilities. There are options for all price levels including a wide selection of motels on main approach roads, holiday apartments at some of Mackay’s most popular beaches, a hotel overlooking Mackay Marina on the northern side of the city, and holiday parks with self contained villas ideal for a family break.

Visit Queensland can also help with accommodation in some of the surrounding region from a boutique retreat in the hinterland to a cabin at Finch Hatton Gorge, camping, glamping or a beach house on Keswick Island, resort apartments at a beachside haven and much more.

If you are planning a tropical escape with a few days in Mackay Region then check out the options on places to stay with Visit Queensland.
