With the Great Barrier Reef at its doorstep including islands and coral reefs, beachcombing kangaroos at nearby Cape Hillsborough, an outstanding regional gallery, botanic gardens and riverside walks, and a hinterland that includes one of Queensland’s Great Walks, the range of places to see and things to do in Mackay and the surrounding region will occupy much of your visit. Everyone has heard about scuba diving on the coral reefs of the Great Barrier Reef but Mackay Region has quite a different underwater experience to offer. In the rock pools and creeks within the lush rainforest of beautiful Finch Hatton Gorge live colonies of platypus. One of the world’s most curious creatures and often elusive, the award winning Rainforest Scuba provides a guided tour underwater into the world of the platypus.

There’s more adventure in Finch Hatton Gorge with Forest Flying – a cable gliding experience through the rainforest canopy, up to 25 metres above the forest floor providing a very different perspective on this pristine corner of the Mackay Region. For yet more adrenalin experiences, the GoWake Cable Park has cable skiing, wake-boarding and knee-boarding where first timers can learn the sport or advanced skiers can enjoy the thrills.

If you’d like something more sedate then a visit to the Sugar Shed at Sarina, south of Mackay, has tours that provide a fascinating insight into the history of the sugar industry in Australia and a chance to taste some of their products including gourmet sauces and their own distilled spirits and liqueurs. There are more local products to sample at Goanna Brewing mico-brewery with some 200 different brews on the menu including the non-alcoholic Goanna Ginger Beer.
