The Whitsunday archipelago is the largest island group off Australia’s east coast, a string of 74 tropical islands. These wooded islands offer stunning scenery and, being part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, many of them have spectacular fringing reefs. Only a handful of the islands are inhabited with holiday accommodation from exclusive island hideaways that offer the last word in luxury, to eco-retreats and family friendly island resorts bursting with activities. Hamilton Island is the largest of the holiday islands and also has the main airport for the Whitsunday region as well as a ferry terminal, resort, village and marina. Connections are also available from here to Daydream Island Resort, the luxurious One & Only Hayman Island, and Long Island.

On the mainland, Airlie Beach is the colourful and vibrant centre of holiday activity with a wide range of accommodation from backpacker hostels to hotels and holiday apartments. You’ll find good dining and a host of tours and activities including the daily reef cruises out to Hardy’s Reef and the Cruise Whitsunday pontoon where visitors can snorkel, dive or see the underwater world from a semi submersible. The other ‘must see’ is beautiful Whitehaven Beach on Whitsunday Island – a 7km stretch of glorious white sandy shores and crystal clear waters.

The calm blue waters of the Whitsundays are perfect for sailing and you can charter a yacht for some ‘bareboat sailing’ and set a course to discover the islands, weigh anchor in a glorious sheltered inlet, or stop in at one of the island resorts for dinner.
