Cairns is the hub for activities in Tropical North Queensland and offers a wide choice of accommodation from hotels and resorts to apartments and backpacker hostels. With so much to experience, Cairns is the ideal base if you are seeking plenty of action and activities.
If you prefer something more leisurely – a beach lined with swaying palms where the pace is a little easier, good accommodation and plenty of dining choices, then there are options both north and south of Cairns. Mission Beach to the south is a beachcomber’s paradise where you can relax, wander along an endless beach and chill out in comfort. North of Cairns, some 20 minutes drive, is the stylish beach haven of Palm Cove with luxury apartments, good cafes and outstanding restaurants to enjoy.
The corniche road that traces the coast northward with spectacular views leads to the popular former sugar port turned fashionable holiday destination of Port Douglas. A favourite with international visitors, Port Douglas has hotel resorts and holiday apartment accommodation to offer, great dining, golf and day cruises to the Great Barrier Reef. Choose something in the heart of Port Douglas or more secluded such as Thala Beach Nature Reserve, which occupies a wooded peninsula and coconut grove south of Port Douglas.
Further north is the Daintree – the world’s oldest rainforest – and visitors can experience its splendour at an eco-resort or stay at a cosy B&B. The ranges that back the coast offer yet more to see and experience making a few days of exploring the Atherton Tablelands well worthwhile. Accommodation options include motels, B&Bs, lodges, rainforest resorts and holiday parks.
